Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. The NIH (National Institute of Health) has a handy BMI calculator so you can easily calculate your BMI and associated health risk. Here is the link to get you started:
So now you know your number and the handy category chart helps you understand that number a little better. But let me provide you with a word of caution…my BMI has always been “off the charts” on the underweight side so I am categorized as malnourished! Those of you who know me, I think, would tend to disagree. I practice what I preach – eat healthy, exercise, get my rest, etc. etc. But over my lifetime, this is how I am/this is me! And if you look at my family, my brothers were all around 6’4″ and weighed around 160# – plug that in the calculator – malnourished too!! So be sure to also read about the Limitations of the BMI found on the calculator page.
Some other features of the NIH BMI Calculator site that I thought were really worth exploring were Healthy Weight Tools, Recipes and Menu Plans, Portion Distortion Quiz, and loads more Resources! And there is an app to download the calculator to your iphone!
